So now that I'm completely FREAKED OUT and convinced that I will have to deal with mice and roaches, I'm choosing to move on and not dwell on that thought right now, especially considering it won't be a reality for a long time. For now, I figure I should focus on what I need to do today to make my dream a reality, and part of that is... downsizing. I don't use that word lightly.
I'm what you call a "stuff" person. I'm not a hoarder, per se, as I have no problem getting rid of old things. Rather, I just absolutely love getting new things. Correction: loved. Slowly but surely I am starting to realize how much my stuff is weighing me down, literally and figuratively. What's the point? As I type this, I'm looking around my bedroom, currently the most cluttered room in my house. Piles of shoes in the corner (several of which have not been worn), enough makeup to put Sephora to shame, random empty vases and containers, a half-broken dresser with sheets, flannel PJ's and jewelry hanging out, and don't even get me started on what's under the bed. It's exhausting.
So now, I have to get rid of stuff. Get rid of stuff and not buy stuff. Sounds easy enough, but again, it's exhausting. The first step is listing what I can on Craigslist. The second is taking clothes/shoes/accessories to a local consignment shop. The third is really figuring out what I actually need, as those "needs" will be what I take with me to NYC. I have a feeling it doesn't include 40 necklaces and a library of books...
Are you a "stuff" person? How do I do this? What's on your "needs" list?

List what you can on Craig's list
ReplyDeleteStart giving things away as gifts
And just start using what is left of your stuff
I think 40 necklaces would be all right. They're fairly easy to pack.. it'd be more of the things like books, and furniture that would be the problem
Think about an ebook reader instead of that library if you are so inclined to keep everything
Fabulously Broke is right. The 40 necklaces are all right.
ReplyDeleteWhen I have purged stuff, I just kept things I used often - and also tried not to have too many duplicates - example: owning only one set of sheets. Some people think it's insane, but honestly, I like stripping the bed, washing it, and putting the nice warm sheets right back on and, bonus, no need for space to store additional sheet sets etc. (re guests, because husband and I live in a studio, we dont have overnight guests, but when I did have guests, I had a second set of sheets sized to the daybed).
I can vouch for the fact books are the hardest. I have always tried not to buy books, and just go to the library, with the exception of cookbooks. My husband owns a ton of books, and honestly, it makes our apartment more cluttered than I would like, but what can you do, you know? He loves his books and stuff a lot and it makes him happy.
I don't love the idea of kindle etc, which is why i prefer the library.
Ugh. Seriously, same boat. Stressed. Overwhelmed. Want to start right this very second, but don't even know how.
ReplyDeleteI'm also a stuff person...my husband is not. This is nice in that only my office is ever really messy. My weakness is books though...our bookcase is full full full with more books than will fit.
ReplyDeleteI do love purging though. When I do, I usually get rid of everything I haven't used in a year. Especially with clothes and shoes...If I haven't worn it in a year, or if it doesn't fit I toss it. I can usually get rid of half the stuff in my closet like that. Even more if I get rid of things that don't match anything.
I also have a hard time getting rid of sentimental things...but really, what am I going to do with a year-old playbill for a musical? I say get rid of most everything. It feels so good to clear things out!
